Alderwood is named after Etobicoke, the municipality of which it originally was a part, which is a native word meaning "place where the alder trees grow".

Alderwood real estate consists of long linear streets are lined with rows of bungalows homes and storey-and-a-half houses. These houses were built during the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's. Many of the older Alderwood homes have been replaced with more modern semi-detached and detached homes.
